Wasp solitaire rules8/15/2023 ![]() ![]() When everything was turning into (even more of) a CGI-fireworks by the third act, I was wondering how a friggin' "Ant-Man"-movie had turned into this. maybe this is technically correct?īut yeah, this whole thing is lacking the grounded charm of the two first movies. Or is it? I mean, this is explicitly about "Ant-Man and the Wasp", but we don't know exactly which Wasp, because Hope's mother Janet van Dyne is technically also the Wasp and she almost turns into the protagonist of the movie for large stretches, so. I'm not kidding, but while Evangeline Lilly's Hope van Dyne gets a bunch of token hero-moments, she contributes basically nothing to the plot of the movie and her name is in the friggin' title. And even the recurring characters who are in the movie don't get all that much to do. Also David Dastmalchian voices one of the creatures they come across in the Quantum Realm, which is nice, I guess, but I still kind of miss Kurt). Randall Park's Jimmy Woo shows up for all of ten seconds and doesn't even have a line, but Paxton, Maggie, Dave, Kurt and friggin' Luis are nowhere to be seen (couldn't one of the post-credit-scenes have been Luis recounting the plot of the movie to somebody? That would have been great. Sure, technically on a smaller scale, because the whole thing is set within the Quantum Realm and therefore everything is kind of tiny, but this movie points the Quantum Realm as a really expansive location with whole civilizations and empires and shit in it and the cast of characters is huge and while most of them are quirky and likeable enough to not drag the whole thing down, I miss Scott's old supporting-cast. ![]() While the first two movies were small in scope (SCNR), thanks to personal stories with low stakes and a small but well-rounded cast of characters, this foregoes all of that and tries to do something more similar to "Guardians Of The Galaxy", for example. So here's "Quantumania"'s (I'm just gonna stick with that now) biggest problem: It's really, really different from these first two movies and has pretty much none of the things that made them so enjoyable in it. Yes, they don't really advance the mighty metaplot of the MCU in any meaningful way and the badguys are usually kind of forgettable, but both of these things don't really matter to me, because a) I'm more interested in movies that are enjoyable on their own first and foremost instead of small puzzle-pieces that paint a bigger picture at some point in time and b) the heroes of these movies are so great that I don't care about lame badguys or weak stories, it's just fun to spend time with them. Fun, funny, intimate, with a great cast of actors and characters and especially the second one is a masterclass in setup and payoff. it's a weird-ass, pretty annoying movie, but it's something that happened to Thor and I like Thor, so what gives?), that's not gonna stop me from discussing all of them in detail, right? So first, let me go on record to say that I think that the first two "Ant-Man"-movies are probably the most underappreciated ones among the MCU-oeuvre. And while I mentioned once or twice that I'm so invested in the whole MCU-stuff that these things are basically critic-proof to me (which is probably the only reason I still liked "Thor: Love & Thunder". So "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" is still decent, right? Right. Why "bad" in quotation marks? Because I still happen to like both "Iron Man 2" and (to a lesser extent) "Thor: Love & Thunder". It's probably the second-worst, after "Thor: Love & Thunder" and about as "bad" as "Iron Man 2". "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" isn't the worst MCU-movie yet. Which is bullshit and meaningless as well, but. ![]() according to review-aggregators, the worst one yet, tying with "Eternals" when it comes to the idiotic but somehow still relevant to some Tomato-score and even below that when it comes to Metacritics metascore. 3" is in cinemas at the moment and apparently pretty spectacular) in the franchise and. The second most recent movie released ("Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. The first movie of Phase Five of the whole undertaking.
